Crystal Cruises - Greece Athens to Italy Rome - Food and Wine Festival

Day 1, Athens/Piraeus, Greece (overnight)

Piraeus is Greece’s largest port and has been a gateway to the Mediterranean since 482 BC. It lies on the innermost point of the Saronic Gulf and is a short drive from Athens, the cradle of Western democracy and culture. Throughout the ages, Athens’ lofty Acropolis has been a source of inspiration. The ancient ruins scattered throughout this legendary city are reminders of Greece’s great cultural heritage.

Day 2, Athens/Piraeus, Greece

Piraeus is Greece’s largest port and has been a gateway to the Mediterranean since 482 BC. It lies on the innermost point of the Saronic Gulf and is a short drive from Athens, the cradle of Western democracy and culture. Throughout the ages, Athens’ lofty Acropolis has been a source of inspiration. The ancient ruins scattered throughout this legendary city are reminders of Greece’s great cultural heritage.

Day 3, Patmos, Greece

Considered the ” Jerusalem of the Aegean,” the Greek isle of Patmos has a rich Christian heritage. The Monastery of Saint John was founded in 1088 and is a UNESCO World Heritage site, as is the Cave of the Apocalypse, the grotto where John the Apostle received the visions he recorded in the Book of Revelation. The Patmian School, a noted Greek seminary, is also located on the island.

Deep Christian roots make Patmos a destination for pilgrims, while the island’s white-sand beaches, secluded coves and beautiful marina make it a popular destination for worshippers of the sun.

Day 4, Rhodes/Lindos, Greece

Best known of the Dodecanese islands, Rhodes is rich with natural beauty, architectural variety and colorful history. The city of Rhodes is architecturally one of the most varied in Europe. Hellenistic, Byzantine, Medieval and Turkish architectural styles freely intermingle. Sunshine and dry air combine to cast such a magnificent light over the island that the ancients dedicated Rhodes to Apollo, the God of Light.

Day 5, Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos, a former 18th-century pirates’ bastion, is now a sophisticated and cosmopolitan island resort. This quintessential Greek island offers a maze of winding streets, graceful windmills, inviting beaches, domed churches and whitewashed houses accented in blue. Dotting the waterfront are cafés, taverns and tempting shops. Guests may spend the day exploring the island independently. Feel free to investigate its fine boutiques and pleasant, labyrinthine streets. For helpful hints or suggestions on things to do while you are ashore, please contact the onboard Shore Excursions staff.

Day 6, Santorini/Thíra, Greece

Of all the Cyclades Islands, Santorini is often considered the most dramatic. Once an active volcano, it was known as Stongyle, or the Round Island. In about 1500 BC, the volcano erupted with such force that the center of the island literally exploded, leaving the haunting submerged crater into which Crystal sails. The island’s small villages were preserved in the ashes and recent excavations have uncovered a fascinating view of everyday life from 3,500 years ago.

Santorini’s dark landscape offsets its simple, yet refined Cycladic buildings, which glimmer in the sunlight. The rich volcanic soil is ideal for grapes and the local vines produce a cherished crop known for its “special volcanic taste.”

Thíra, or Fira Town, is laid out along the edge of a cliff that partially forms the rim of the now extinct caldera. A picturesque site, it exudes charm and an atmosphere of leisure that can be attributed to the easy-going Greek lifestyle.

Day 7, Navplion, Greece

When in Greece, do as the Grecians do: Go to the Peloponnese. Connected by a narrow isthmus (it’s less than four miles across at its narrowest) off the southern end of central Greece, the Peloponnese is a large peninsula with many things going for it. Not only are there fewer crowds than on the Aegean islands, it has just as many-if not more-ancient sites, including the temples at Nemea and Olympia. On the sunny east coast of the Peloponnese, tucked away in a deep bay, is the city of Navplion.
As Greece’s first capital after the Greek War of Independence in the 1820s, Návplion has its share of history, including two Venetian fortresses and many neoclassical buildings. But in fact, Navplion is the more modern side of Greece — a relaxed and appealing place with leafy parks, small museums, picturesque streets and lively outdoor cafes.

Day 8, Kefalonia/Argostolion, Greece

The largest of the Ionian Islands in western Greece, Kefalonia has its share of natural wonders and interesting history. In the wonders category are Melissani, an underground lake with gorgeous, deep blue water; the island’s numerous beaches, which are some of the most beautiful in the world; and Drogarati Cave, a showcase of stalactites and stalagmites that have been forming for thousands of years. Historically, the island has been in under French, Ottoman and British rule, and was occupied by Axis powers during World War II. Also seminal to Kefalonia’s past was the quake of 1953, a 7.3 trembler that destroyed virtually every house on the island.

  • Today, Kefalonia is emerging as a vacationer’s paradise. The island and its capital of Argostoli draw people from far and wide with pleasant weather, a picturesque bay and the Koutavos Lagoon, a feeding ground for Loggerhead turtles.

    Day 9, Crotone, Italy

Located down south on the ball of the foot of the boot of Italy, Crotone is as connected to Greece as it is to its own country of Italy. In fact, Kroton, as it was known in the days of ancient Greece, was a colonial outpost of Magna Graecia, and was even home to Greek mathematician and metaphysician Pythagoras. The sum of Mediterranean beauty and ancient history equals a traveler’s paradise, as your call will soon prove. A wide stretch of beach and many significant buildings and archaeological finds are all within a stone’s throw. The Cathedral, a 16th-century gem with a neo-classical design encrusted with Baroque interior decoration, deserves a visit. On a small island just off the city’s coast sits Le Castella, a castle that can be reached by foot along a narrow causeway. At Capo Collano Archaeological Park, you’ll see remnants of defensive towers and the solitary Doric column, virtually all that remains of a temple dating to the 5th century BC.

Day 10, Cruising the Ionian Sea

Aboard the most award-winning ships at sea, your story can be written exactly as you wish: pamper yourself at the Feng Shui-inspired Crystal Spa, work-out at our state-of-the-art fitness center or Walk-on-Water along our 360o Promenade Deck; learn how to translate your story into a movie with USC’s School of Cinematic Arts Digital Filmmaking class at our Creative Learning Institute ®; or learn about art, history and worldly destinations with our engaging celebrity entertainers and speakers with our Crystal Visions® Enrichment Program; sneak away to watch recently-released movies in the Hollywood Theatre, shop our luxury boutiques, or simply lounge poolside while our attentive crew caters to your every whim. From mat Pilates and yoga to PGA golf instruction and paddle tennis on full-size courts, today is all about you. As evening arrives, dine on the renowned culinary creations of Nobu Matsuhisa, and Crystal’s own acclaimed chefs with new Modern Cuisine and Global Inspired menus, enjoy special wine-makers dinners, breakout new production shows, intimate lounges, a pulsing dance club or our action-packed Crystal Casino. The choices as always aboard the World’s Best are yours. How will you write your story on board?

    Day 11, Sorrento, Italy

As your ship approaches the Sorrento Peninsula, delight in craggy cliffs draped with flowing pink blossoms.

Renowned for its serene way of life, this romantic port exudes a special magic. Its dramatic bluffs and surrounding flowered hills bid travelers welcome to a town overflowing with charm and character. It is easy to relax in this languid southern Italian atmosphere.

The sensational Amalfi Coast and the haunting ruins at Pompeii are among the region’s highlights.

    Day 12, Rome/Civitavecchia, Italy (overnight)

Civitavecchia was founded by Emperor Trajan in the 2nd century. Today this port is noted for its fine seafood and attractive monuments. Located 90 minutes away is the Eternal City of Rome. Steeped in 2,500 years of history, Rome was for many centuries the center of Western civilization. It was both the focal point of the Roman Empire and of Christendom. Landmarks such as the Colosseum, Forum, Pantheon, Vatican, Sistine Chapel and Spanish Steps are reminders of the legacy of its rich past.

[accor_block title=”What is this new Personal Select Air/Sea Program for 2015/16 cruises?”]Crystal’s Personal Select Air/Sea Program allows guests to select their flights, class of service and date of travel from a choice of multiple itinerary options or in consultation with our experienced Air/Sea Concierge. Guests may indicate their preference for Personal Select Air/Sea at time of booking or at any time prior to sailing. Personal Select Air/Sea Program rates are based on the selected itinerary and include transfers between the airport and pier on embarkation/disembarkation dates. Guests participating in Crystal’s Personal Select Air/Sea Program also have the assurance of Crystal’s support in the event of unanticipated airline or cruise schedule changes or delays that may impact their air travel plans.
    [/accor_block]

[accor_block title=”What cruises are applicable under the new program?”]All cruises in 2015 and 2016.
    [/accor_block]

[accor_block title=”How does the new program work?”]Guests may specify their intention to book our Personal Select Air/Sea Program at time of booking. Once the cruise booking is confirmed and we are within 10 months of the sailing date, the travel agent will have access to the Air/Sea flight booking engine to search for itineraries and fares. They can then book the selected itinerary directly online. Bookings made within 10 months of sailing will have immediate access.
    [/accor_block]

[accor_block title=”Why can’t the flights be booked more than 10 months prior to departure?”]Airlines publish their schedules approximately 11 months prior to flight departure. The Crystal Program will be available at 10 months prior to sailing giving us time to verify that Air/Sea fares have been filed and that airline seats are open for sale.
    [/accor_block]

[accor_block title=”Which airports are available under the new program?”]Travel must originate from a United States or Canadian airport served by an airline carrier that has a contract with Crystal Cruises. Your travel agent will have access to the most up-to-date gateway cities/airport list via the Crystal Cruises Reservations system.
    [/accor_block]

[accor_block title=”How is access to the Air/Sea booking engine obtained?”]Travel agents will be emailed a link for online access when flights are made available 10 months prior to sailing. Crystal Cruises’ Reservations and Air Department will also have access to the system.
    [/accor_block]

[accor_block title=”Is Crystal Cruises still offering a guaranteed Air/Sea rate at time of booking?”]No. We are not offering the option of a pre-set guaranteed rate on 2015 and 2016 sailings . Guests will now have the benefit of being confirmed on the best schedules and fares available at the time the flight is booked/confirmed.
    [/accor_block]

[accor_block title=”If I book a 2016 itinerary now, will you remind me to book the air travel portion when flights are available for sale?”]Yes. An e-mail reminder will be sent to your travel agent so he or she can coordinate your air arrangements.
    [/accor_block]

[accor_block title=”When do I pay for the flights?”]Once an air itinerary is selected and confirmed, payment for the air portion of the trip must be received by Crystal within 24 hours. The air ticket will be issued upon receipt of payment. Air tickets may be reissued or refunded less fees assessed by the air carriers and cruise line per the program terms as noted below. Guests can arrive in the port city a day earlier or spend additional days after the cruise. Custom Air also offers the opportunity to upgrade the class of service, stop in a city en route to the ship, leave and return to different cities, or pay for a one-way itinerary. [accor_block title=”How are airline service requests handled?”]Yes. If a guest has a complicated routing or prefers a route other than those offered in our standard selection, our Air/Sea Concierge will customize an air itinerary. Guests can arrive in the port city a day earlier or spend additional days after the cruise. Custom Air also offers the opportunity to upgrade the class of service, stop in a city en route to the ship, leave and return to different cities, or pay for a one-way itinerary. [accor_block title=”How are airline service requests handled?”]Airline seat assignments, special meal requests, special service requests such as wheelchair assistance, and the addition of frequent flyer account numbers to records must be arranged directly with the air carriers by guests or their travel agents. We strongly recommend visiting the airline website or calling the airline immediately at the time the itinerary is confirmed. Accrual of frequent flyer miles may be restricted when using Air/Sea fares.

We recommend that travelers also provide the air carriers with a phone contact, e-mail address, and/or text number that can be used for notification in the event of a flight delay, boarding gate change or other unexpected event.

[accor_block title=”What if the airline schedule requires an overnight at the port city or a long layover?”]In the event that adequate air service from the preferred airport is not available at the time the itinerary is booked, the guest has the option of selecting an alternate gateway, choosing to overnight enroute at his or her own expense, or booking alternative flights directly with the airlines. If the guest chooses Crystal’s Personal Select Air/Sea Program and, due to a lack of same-day air itineraries, opts to overnight on the embarkation or disembarkation date in the port city, Crystal will assist in securing hotel accommodations and arranging for transfers between the airport and hotel, and the hotel and the pier. If the time between flight arrival/departure time and the embarkation/disembarkation time is more than 6 hours, guests may want to consider purchasing a day room or overnight hotel room for their comfort. Guests are responsible for the hotel costs, all meals and other items of a personal nature.

Cruise Protection cancellation coverage does not apply to air tickets unless the Crystal Cruises Protection Plan is purchased when the air ticket payment is made. By purchasing Cruise Protection at time of air ticketing, the guest is also covered for medical conditions that may arise after that date and may otherwise be considered preexisting.
